Working House Fire, Dash/Fire Attack, Allegany County, MD 01.22.2010
On 1/22/2010 at approximately 1335
hours, Southside Box 22-3 was
dispatched for a house fire on Elene St
north of Westernport. Engine
Company 22, Truck 24, Engine Tanker
19, Tanker 36 and EMS 50 was
dispatched on the call. Engine Tanker
22 responded with 6 and A/C 22
Derham. Engine Tanker 22 called for
the working fire alarm while responding
to the call with visible smoke in the
area. The 1/2 mile long narrow steep
driveway off of Route 36 was snow
covered and slippery for the apparatus
to make it into the scene. Engine
Tanker 22 arrived on the scene as
close as it could get and established
the Elene St Command. High velocity
brown smoke was pushing out of the
basement door on side Alpha upon
arrival.
A single story single family dwelling
with an above ground basement. The
crew advanced an 1 3/4" attack line to
the door on side alpha and began an
aggressive attack on the fire. The fire
had extended into the 1st Floor
bedroom on the A/D corner of the
residence. Additional crew members
advanced a 200' leader line with a
wye to the dwelling. The high rise
pack was utilized to extend from the
leader line to reach the 1st floor of
the building on the Charlie side.
Engine 221 was the next to arrive with
a crew of 5. Engine 221 only made it
up the driveway to within 400' of the
Engine Tanker. A 5 inch supply was
hand jacked from the Engine Tanker
to the Engine to supply the water.
Additional units were brought up to
the Engine one at a time. The
driveway access had no area where
units could turn around or set up a fill
site.
Command called for a 2 Alarm for additional manpower due to the remote location of the fire. The initial attack crew put a
real good knock on the fire in the basement area. However the fire had extended to the first floor. The crew split up due to
the lack of manpower in the remote area and began to attack the fire on the first floor with the leader line. Additional
members from Engine 221 arrived at the scene and began backing up the initial attack crew. Crews also threw ground
ladders to the building. Truck 24's crew arrived on the scene and also assisted with fire attack on the first floor. Chief 22
Dayton arrived on the scene and assumed the command. A/C Derham took over the operations. Due to the lack of
access to the scene, crews from additional units had to walk close to 1/4 mile just to reach the fire scene. Once enough
firefighters were on the scene, a crew was able to make access to the roof to cut a ventilation hole. Attack crews also had
to deal with the fire setting off ammunition in the master bedroom during the fire attack on the first floor. Crews were able
to make an aggressive attack on the fire with a long extensive overhaul operation.
